Sukhvir’ Story

Sukhvir graduated from Rutgers University in 2014 with a Major GPA of 4.0 with a degree in Finance from the Rutgers Business School. He’s currently a full time employee at the Prudential Investments as an Investment Analyst. On his part-time, he has followed his passion to start a bhangra academy for all ages in the New Jersey area to teach and instill punjab culture and value in kids.

Sukhvir learned bhangra at a very young age of when he was about 6 years old. He learned from his Coach Saggi Saab in Nawanshahr, India. Over continuance practice and over 15 years of experience, he has cleaned and perfected majority of all bhangra moves. Sukhvir performed in local high school cultures shows and eventually joined the Rutgers Bhangra team in his freshman year of college. He was one of the founding fathers of Dhamak Punjab Di Bhangra team at Rutgers University in 2009 and helped register the team through Rutgers University and raise funding of over $2,000 from the University. Sukhvir was Captain of Dhamak Punjab Di Bhangra team for over a year and helped raise over $5,000 from gigs to buy bhangra uniforms, Khunde, Saaps, T-shirts, and other props to eventually get a chance to go to Big Apple Bhangra Competition. Sukhvir has visited India recently to perfect on his bhangra skills, better learn the dhol, and learn Bhangra Paggs from his Coach back home Saggi Saab and Pavandeep Paji.

After graduating college, he wanted to continue his passion for bhangra. After much deliberate thought and advice from friends, families, and other bhangra academies, Sukhvir decided to open Rangla Punjab Academy to teach bhangra to students of all ages. On September 13th, 2014, Rangla Punjab Academy was born. It was the beginnings of great things to come. With the help of many close friends and family, Sukhvir hosted a Rangla Punjab Diwali Culture show, which got many praises and appreciation from kids and family alike.

Sukhvir will hope to continue to keep his passion alive for Punjabi Performing Arts and spread culture and instill great values in our younger generation.

They’ve said about Sukhvir’s work

  • Rangla Punjab Bhangra Academy has given me the opportunity to learn my culture in depth. Before joining, I knew  a little bit about Bhangra and was unaware of certain things. But now, I’m able to learn new steps and moves and then show my family and friends at the shows that we have. The best part is that I get to be with my friends while doing Bhangra and there’s no greater feeling than that. They help me learn and have fun. Class is never a struggle and it’s always enjoyable with the fun days like Halloween day where we got to dress up in our costumes. Moreover, Bhangra is a fun way to connect to our tradition and continue it. This Academy has given me the opportunity to learn new things and experience Bhangra like never before.

  • Rangla Punjab Academy is such a great warm environment. Everyone is so nice and Sukhvir Bhaji, our coach, is very dedicated and hardworking. He handles the academy with a great passion. He has a desire to spread punjabi culture and bhangra skills to everyone. We also are introduced to different forms of music and it’s so much fun to dance to these songs. It’s a fun and exciting experience overall 🙂

  • Rangla Punjab Academy is a place to spread culture and acknowledge furthermore about our roots. Every student may be doing sports and other type of activities but they don’t touch base on what their culture is all about. Rangla Punjab Academy is a friendly and patient atmosphere to let your loved ones experience what their ancestors have done.

  • I’ve been to many different dance academies, however my experience at Rangla Punjab is the best so far. The coach is very nice and understanding. He keeps everything simple, which makes picking up the steps very easy. He turned some of the worst dancers into star students. We have performed two times and during both of the times, everything was perfect. Everyone had tons of fun and we enjoyed the whole experience. Rangla Punjab is one of the best academies out there and I’m positive that once you try it, you won’t be able to wait for the next time you go back.

  • My experience at Rangla Punjab is amazing so far. I love it! Especially the freestyles we have at end of class and dancing on old folk songs. Also making new friends and sticking to our punjabi culture.
